Color copies of found vintage handwritten recipe pages, acrylic paint
Cakewalk is an installation of color copies of vintage handwritten recipe pages and hand-painted signs that spanned the path from my apartment to my painting studio in Philadelphia, Pa, where I lived for three summers. Intended as a map of the artist’s creative journey from kitchen to studio, the installation highlighted the handwritten recipe page as a measure of personal history and identity. With its marks of the individual apparent in handwriting and fingerprint, and its patina of age and use, the handwritten recipe page has many of the attributes of a work of art. As such, it transcends mere instructions for cooking or baking.
