These mixed-media works on paper and canvas are about the connection between nature and the human body. Similar to my portraits in oils, I’m interested in the sensual, emotional experience of both my subject matter and the materials I use to depict them. The gestures of the marks I make are intuitively chosen to express my poetic experience of the forms.

I think of my subjects — whether people or place — not only as specific things but also as containers for metaphor. Some of the ideas that inhabit my paintings of nature and the body are uncertainty, transience, life’s brevity, a poetic rather than a literal response to the world, and personal history.
